To kick-off our “Featured Employers” blog series, we’re placing the spotlight on Mercy Regional Medical Center with Recruiter, Brenda D’Amico:

1.Tell us about what you do and the contact you have with Ohio Business College.

I am a Recruiter for Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain. I have a great working relationship with Ohio Business College and, in particular, with Tina Hutchinson, OBC’s Externship Coordinator/Career Services Associate. Tina is great at sending me recent graduates who are ready to start interviewing. She knows our recruiting process and prepares every student prior to coming into Mercy for an interview.

2. What programs at OBC do you recruit from?

I recruit for Medical Assistants, Medical Administrative Assistants (Registrars), Secretaries, and Phlebotomists through OBC.

3. What does Mercy Hospitals look for in a new hire?

Mercy looks for candidates who are truly compassionate about their work and genuinely enjoy being of service to our patients. Mercy welcomes candidates of all beliefs and faith traditions. We believe a diverse work force is a tremendous asset. We will hire recent graduates as well as experienced students.

4. What do you think sets OBC graduates apart from others in their field?

Ohio Business College does an excellent job of preparing their students to find a career in healthcare. They give them clinical classroom education, hands-on externship opportunities, and career counseling – including resume writing, mock interviews, and career guidance. Students graduating from OBC have a great foundation to have successful careers.

5. What advice or tips do you have for prospective and current OBC students who are looking to work in a medical setting like Mercy Hospital? What can they do to increase their chances for employment and career success?

Be open minded and demonstrate compassion in all of your interactions. Many healthcare workers forget that we come here because we want to, patients do not always come here because they want to. Take the time to show compassion, listen, and care. Be open minded to your patients’ thoughts and concerns, and treat everyone with human dignity and demonstrate justice in all of your relationships.
