The first step towards becoming a Real Estate agent is to complete the pre-licensing course. This is a 10-week Real Estate pre-licensing program offered at the campus in Lorain County.

At Ohio Business College class sizes are small to allowing students to work closely with school instructors and other class participants preparing students to take the Ohio Real Estate Salesperson’s licensing exam.

The Ohio Business College Pre-Licensing certificate course is ideal for beginners with no previous real estate knowledge. Your school instructor will cover many topics during the fast-paced course that you can expect to find on the state exam. Below are examples of real estate pre-licensing coursework.

  • Appraisal: Before a property can go on the market, it requires an appraisal to determine its value. A neutral third party must complete the appraisal to eliminate bias from either seller or buyer.
  • Customer Service: Professional communication skills, tact, empathy, sales skills, and strong business acumen are just some customer service skills you need as a real estate professional.
  • Finance: Real estate agents and brokers must understand financing options and explain them in a way that clients can understand. Clients depend on professionals representing them to help them choose the most advantageous financing in a real estate transaction.
  • Law: Real estate is a highly regulated industry that requires deep knowledge of law at all levels of government. Client confidentiality is just one example.
  • Real estate principles and best practices: Learn what it takes to be a successful in your role by understanding the principles that guide the real estate industry. You also learn which practices to use and which to avoid from instructors with years of experience in the field.

What Are the Duties of a
Real Estate Agent or Broker?

If you’re looking for a flexible, satisfying career with high earning potential, real estate may be right for you. Real estate agents work with clients to buy and sell residential and commercial property according to their needs and budget. This includes acres of land for future development. Below are just some duties you might complete in a typical day as a real estate agent. Please note that brokers must have a minimum of two years of post-secondary education, have at least two years of working as a Real Estate Agent and take a broker’s exam.

  • Research to locate available listings to show to clients, real estate market analysis, and ongoing study of trends and best practices within the real estate industry.
  • Administrative duties such as answering phone calls, updating property listings, scheduling appointments to show properties, ordering supplies for the office, preparing documents, and sending documents to buyers, sellers, and others involved in a real estate transaction.
  • Marketing duties including creating and maintaining a social media presence, developing networking opportunities, creating and managing advertising campaigns, and managing the real estate company’s website.

Real estate agents typically work under the supervision of real estate brokers. Brokers must obtain a higher level of real estate education and work for at least two years as a sales agent before advancing. Typical duties of a supervising real estate broker include:

  • Writing contracts and supervising real estate sales transactions.
  • Ensures that all agents working with him or her have appropriate licensing.
  • Monitors agent performance and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal real estate laws.

Brokers can also choose to work primarily with buyers or sellers. In this instance, real estate brokers and agents complete many of the same duties. For example, a broker representing a buyer would help arrange for a home inspection and provide guidance when submitting a bid for the property. Sample duties of a broker representing a seller include listing the property for sale on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and supervising property showings.
